3. Training methods and study period

1. On-the-job graduate students who are studying for a master's degree in engineering will take courses and scientific research without leaving the school. The course implements the credit system, and implements multi-disciplinary comprehensive and wide-caliber training;

2. The field of mechanical engineering emphasizes the importance of rigorous attitude, innovative consciousness and dedication to scientific research. Therefore, it places strong emphasis on strengthening the ideological and political work and the situation and policy education for postgraduates.

3. Carry out the policy of integrating theory with practice, adopt the principle of combining systematic theoretical study, scientific research work and social practice, encourage master students to actively participate in beneficial social activities and public welfare labor, and strengthen the training of scientific research ability and practical skills;

4. The dual-tutor responsibility system is adopted, with an interdisciplinary tutor group advocated to promote interdisciplinary studies and broaden students’ horizons. Postgraduate students are encouraged to collaborate with experts and scholars with senior technical titles in scientific research institutes and enterprises as off-campus tutors.

5. Postgraduate course study adopts a combination of classroom lectures, self-study and discussion, focusing on cultivating and strengthening postgraduates' self-study ability and ability to independently analyze and solve problems;

6. . The field aims to create a good academic atmosphere for graduate students by providing funding and experimental conditions, and by encouraging and organizing graduate students to regularly attend academic reports or participate in academic conferences. This helps graduate students to timely understand and grasp the cutting-edge information in related research fields.

7. The field of mechanical engineering places a strong emphasis on strengthening engineering application practice, as it is an important link in the training process of graduate students. Sufficient and high-quality professional practice is an essential guarantee for the quality of training. The main purpose of the practical part of the Master of Engineering is to deepen the research of engineering technology or engineering management and improve the ability of technological innovation according to the characteristics of the graduate student’s unit, combined with the training objectives and topic selection intention. The practical results directly serve the technical transformation and efficient production of the unit.

8. The study period for graduate students in mechanical engineering is generally 2-3 years, with the longest duration being no more than 5 years. This provides ample time for students to gain a comprehensive understanding of their field and develop practical skills, while also balancing their professional responsibilities.

4. Curriculum

1. Degree courses: basic theoretical compulsory courses of the majors studied, applicable to various research directions;

2. Non-degree courses: divided into two parts: compulsory courses/links and elective courses. The elective courses highlight the professional characteristics, focus on broadening the knowledge of graduate students, and promoting the research direction and cross-discipline;

3. Credit allocation: The credit system is implemented for postgraduate courses, and the total number of credits to be completed is 32 credits, of which 21 credits are required for compulsory courses/links (basic courses, professional courses, compulsory links and non-degree compulsory courses), and there are many elective courses at 12 credits;

4. Curriculum: see "Mechanical Engineering Master's Degree Graduate Courses Table".

5. Thesis work

The dissertation is an important link to enable graduate students to receive all the training in scientific research and to cultivate the ability to engage in scientific research or undertake specialized technical work. The topic of the thesis should be derived from actual production, or have a clear engineering background and application value, have certain technical difficulties, reflect the comprehensive application of the knowledge learned, and have a sufficient workload. The research results of the thesis should promote the technological progress of the industry, especially the unit where it is located. The dissertation formats for the professional master's degree in mechanical engineering can be diversified, including applied research dissertations, engineering design, product development, or experimental research dissertations. The thesis research working time (from the date of approval of the opening report to the finalized thesis submission for review and review) is generally at least one year.

Thesis opening report: Graduate students should generally complete the thesis opening report before the end of the third semester to determine the topic of the dissertation. The content of the opening report includes title, project source, literature review, research objectives, research content, key issues to be solved, technical route and implementation method to be adopted, innovation or characteristics to be formed, schedule and credit completion status, etc. It is required to consult no less than 50 literature materials, write a written report of no less than 5,000 words, and report at the opening report meeting. The expert panel evaluates the opening report based on scoring indicators and gives an opinion on whether it can pass or not. Those who pass the opening report can start their dissertation work according to the proposed plan. Those who fail the opening report should make revisions within two months and submit the opening report again.

Mid-term inspection: In the middle of the dissertation work, 3-5 teachers with senior technical titles will be organized to form a mid-term inspection team to conduct the mid-term inspection of the thesis. The content of the inspection includes listening to the progress report of the master's degree project, the ability to use scientific theories to solve practical engineering problems, the prediction of technical problems in the later stage, the technical route to be adopted, and the plan for the end date of the project. The mid-term inspection team writes comments based on the postgraduate thesis research mid-term report and gives specific assessment results. The intercity assessment includes two types: pass and fail. For engineering graduate students who fail the mid-term inspection, the supervisor should help them analyze the reasons and put forward corresponding improvement measures and requirements.

Thesis writing: The dissertation must be completed independently by the master student under the guidance of the supervisor. It should have a certain level of difficulty, depth, and breadth, with a full workload. A dissertation must include clear concepts, correct arguments, rigorous analysis, correct calculations, reliable data, concise sentences, and clear diagrams. These factors should reflect that graduate students have a relatively solid theoretical foundation, broad knowledge, strong independent work ability, and excellent study style. The full text is generally no less than 30,000 words. The dissertation writing format should conform to the uniform standard set by the school, and the content should be organized according to the requirements of different forms of dissertations, such as applied research, engineering design, product research and development, and experimental research.

Defense and degree conferment: After the dissertation of the master's degree graduate students has been reviewed by the school supervisor and the enterprise supervisor, and they are deemed to meet the standards for the master's degree dissertation in engineering, they can apply for the dissertation defense. Before formally submitting the dissertation for review, a pre-defense must be conducted, and the dissertation revision must be completed according to the defense opinions. For specific operations, please refer to the "Working Rules for the Pre-defense of Master's Degree Thesis of the School of Mechanical Engineering".

Papers should be reviewed by two experts with professors, associate professors or equivalent titles, one of whom should be from an industrial and mining enterprise or engineering department. The supervisor of the author of the thesis cannot serve as the reviewer of the thesis.

The dissertation defense committee should be composed of 5-7 experts with professors, associate professors or equivalent titles. At least one-third of the members should be from industrial and mining enterprises or engineering departments, and supervisors cannot be members of the defense committee.

After completing the courses and credits stipulated in the training plan, the graduate students of engineering masters have completed the courses and credits stipulated in the training plan, completed the practice and passed the assessment, completed the work of the dissertation, passed the thesis defense, and reached the training goal after being approved by the degree evaluation committee. Shenzhen University will confer a master degree in engineering. Degree certificates are printed uniformly by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council.
