Lecture Abstract

Intermetallic compounds, high-entropy alloys, refractory metals, and related materials face several common challenges during fabrication. ① Due to gravitational effects, severe compositional segregation often occurs during melting, making it difficult to control interfacial relationships among different phases within the microstructure; ② In addition, after initial forming, these materials are difficult to further process using conventional plastic-deformation techniques, which limits the industrial application of multicomponent alloy systems.

To address these challenges, Professor Geng Guihong’s research group has independently developed a series of advanced fabrication technologies for high-performance metallic materials. These technologies rely on several self-developed specialized processing systems, including: ① an “electromagnetic simulated microgravity + electric-pulse” coupled-field melting system; ② severe-plastic-deformation equipment based on composite extrusion; ③ pulsed-current-assisted rolling equipment. Together, these technologies establish an integrated fabrication route for metallic materials spanning melt processing, severe plastic deformation, and pulsed-current-assisted rolling.

Speaker Profile

Geng Guihong, male, member of the Communist Party of China, Level-2 Professor at North Minzu University, master’s supervisor in Materials Science and Engineering, and adjunct doctoral supervisor at Xi’an Jiaotong University and Hefei University of Technology. From 1985 to 2000, he served as Chief Engineer at Yinchuan Hoisting Machinery General Factory. He received his Ph.D. from the China Academy of Space Technology in 2003 and completed his postdoctoral research in Condensed Matter Physics at Lanzhou University in 2008. He also serves as an expert reviewer for the National Natural Science Foundation of China and as an evaluator for provincial- and ministerial-level research projects at the Ningxia Science and Technology Department, Development and Reform Commission, Human Resources and Social Security Department, and Department of Education. He is a Council Member of the Ningxia Mechanical Engineering Society and Vice Chairman of the Ningxia Materials Research Society. In 1998, he was selected as a Third-Level Cross-Century Academic and Technical Talent in the first batch of the National “Hundred, Thousand, Ten Thousand Talents Project” in Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region. In 2016, he was selected for the National Ethnic Affairs Commission’s Leading Talent Support Program. His research focuses on metallic materials and materials processing engineering. He has led two completed and one ongoing projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, as well as nine provincial- and ministerial-level key R&D projects. He has published more than 100 academic papers, including over 70 papers indexed in SCI and EI databases. He has received two Second-Class and two Third-Class Science and Technology Progress Awards of the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region.
