讲座内容简介

The research centres on developing Circular Hybrid Manufacturing process chains to generate sustainable additive manufacturing (AM) powders via solid-state crushing/ball milling (BM) of machining chips. Here, the viability of the BM process to produce AM powders from three readily available chip materials is evaluated. After that, Metal Additive Manufacturing (AM) has numerous capabilities beyond traditional manufacturing processes, from producing high-strength, lightweight components with highly complex geometries, to manufacturing parts with functionally graded materials. There are, however, significant challenges to overcome to enable wider adoption of Metal AM, such as defect formation and manufacturing consistency. One major challenge is the characteristically poor surface finish of Metal AM components, which is often overcome through expensive post-processing. This lecture discusses the ongoing work at Cardiff University to exploit the abilities of Metal AM processes to directly produce surfaces with not only improved aesthetic qualities, but functional abilities to improve component performance without the post processing.

演讲嘉宾简介

Dr Michael Ryan was appointed as a Lecturer in the High Value Manufacturing Group in Cardiff School of Engineering in 2018. His research specializes in Additive Manufacturing (AM), encompassing novel AM materials development, new engineering applications for AM processes, AM process simulation and the development of functional surfaces using metal AM. Recent industrial research collaborations have included Airbus UK, Safran Seats GB, and MBDA.

Dr Debajyoti Bhaduri is a Lecturer in High-Value Manufacturing within the School of Engineering of Cardiff University. His research interest broadly centres on the advanced machining/grinding, laser-based micro-manufacturing and metal (AM), hybrid manufacturing technologies, such as ultrasonic assisted machining/grinding, surface engineering via physical vapour deposition coating, laser texturing, and laser polishing.
